Hello, friends! I’m Laura, and my husband Bryson and I would love for you to join us as we navigate our little piece of heaven. We both work full-time “real” jobs. I am a high school agriculture teacher and he is a stone mason. That means he installs any and all things stone wherever people will pay for stone to go. Our homesteading is happening on the side. We currently have sheep, horses, and a garden. We grow a little each year and it has been an exciting journey.
We are slowly building our dream farm and we will share our trials and triumphs along the way. This is actually our third farm together. We met in college at North Carolina State. Go Wolfpack! We got married in 2010 and have been adventuring ever since.
When he married me, Bryson got all my horses as well. (What’s yours is mine, right?) That meant we could not start with the normal first apartment or starter home. We rented 10 acres with a very small cabin…and a big barn! It was perfect for what we needed at the time, but we wanted something of our own, and two years later we moved 5 miles up the road to our own 18-ish acres with another small cabin…and no barn! A very small piece of the property was fenced in but not nearly enough for our 6 horses. So Bryson put up a lot of fence. Then we started a small goat herd.
Then Bryson had a great career opportunity that would move us away from the home we started, but open up a whole new world for us. We sold our goat herd to lighten the move (a little), kept horses with friends and family (we were now up to 8), sold our house and land, and moved in with my mom. Whoa. Fortunately, we had found our perfect home spot. But it was trees and fields. As in, no house. No fences. Literally nothing.
This is where the story of our little piece of heaven begins. This was 3 years ago. We have come so far, but still have so far to go! As we continue to grow and build, we will share what we learn about homesteading. We do have a house now, and a lot of fences, 10 horses, and sheep!
We work hard and we play hard, and our hearts are full. We are not experts at any of the things we will share, but we are learning all the time. Follow along as we share how we made it to this point and how we continue to grow. And try to balance two full-time jobs and homesteading on the side.
